These days I've been scarily productive when it comes to writing fics (which robbed me of sleep and left me with a giant pile of work to do), but somehow I spend more time writing the endings of my fics than the current chapters. I'm not sure how to feel about this since I tend to change my endings at the last minute.

Now that I've posted the first eight chapters of "The Red String of Fate", I'm glad that I've posted the story as an independent fic and not as an add-on to "Ghost at Twilight" as planned. Although it only consists of fifteen chapters and one short epilogue (in Chapter 15), it would have made a rather long one-shot. Also, it's better for the formatting to post the short chapters separately because the first letters of the chapter titles form a phrase and the chapters look more like beads that way.

The next updates will be "Ghost at Twilight" and "Encounter in Venice" again although it will take me a while. Summer is the time in which I prefer painting to writing in my free time since the weather is warm enough to paint outside. Whenever I write, I prefer to scribble into notebooks since I don't like toting a laptop around and don't enjoy typing fics into the phone.

 The Red String of Fate

on AO3
on FFNet

Pairing: Shinichi/Ran, Shinichi/Ai

Length: 15 chapters & Epilogue (a few chapters are extremely short while other chapters are really long although most chapters are middle-sized)

Summary: Like beads of various materials, colours, and sizes, our impressions and beliefs are strung together by the invisible thread of destiny… (A Shinichi/Ran  & Shinichi/Ai story and a possible prequel to "Encounter in Venice" & "Ghost at Twilight" in my DC/BSSM crossover universe)

(The chapters of different sizes are strung together like strings of beads or gems, which are attached to the same necklace or bracelet (or anklets) by the initials of the chapter titles.)

The plunny visited me while I was writing "Ghost at Twilight" and was astonishingly resilient despite my efforts to suppress it. The events in "The Red String of Fate" take place in the universe of "Encounter in Venice" and "Ghost at Twilight" before Hattori, Shinichi, and Ai (in "Encounter in Venice") or Shiho (in "Ghost at Twilight") leave for Paris to meet up with fencing teacher who knew where to find the files of the Organization. It's a short multi-chapter which might as well be a long one-shot consisting of fifteen chapters (whose lengths range from extremely short to really long).

Usually, I don't write Shinichi/Ran since I clearly prefer Shinichi/Ai in Aoyama's canon DC universe, but this time, I had to write the pairing because Shinichi is still in love with Ran at this stage. I don't mind since I'm accustomed to writing any pairing which fits into the storyline. I'm more interested in the flowers and the "soul mate vs red string" plot and Shinichi's attempt to follow and challenge fate in the setting of a mystery.

As always, I had a hard time choosing the genre. It can be called a mystery although it's not a regular whodunnit, and the fic is all about the Ran/Shinichi/Ai love triangle at a time when Shinichi was still in love with Ran while he began to develop feelings for Ai, which is why I've chosen Romance/Mystery on FFNet although I'm not comfortable with it. The "romance" tag implies fluff, which can be misleading, but I didn't want to choose "General" since it can mean anything. Tragedy would be too much of a stretch, and the characters don't have many dramatic scenes either although I could have tagged it as a drama as well.

I wondered for a moment whether I should post the fic in the crossover section. But since there aren't any magical girls like in EiV and GaT and I posted the other WIPs into the DC section (at a time when FFNet didn't have any separate crossover section), I posted Red String into the DC section as well.

Finally finished colouring the pic I chose to test Autodesk Sketchbook (on the iPad) to colour fanart! I've used the app before but never exclusively (only to enhance the scans of Copics fanarts). All in all, I'm satisfied with Sketchbook since it worked well most of the time. Only once I had problems to change the brush size.

Copied with pencil, inked on paper and then once again in Sketchbook. I've changed the colours Matsuri Hino used and turned Zero and Yuuki into Shinichi and Shiho because I couldn't resist (and because copying the original picture without changes would have bored me). Shiho doesn't look very Shiho-ish, and I should fix her hair but I don't feel motivated enough to go through the hassle for a copy I only did to test Autodesk Sketchbook. Rae wanted to see a picture with Conan in the dress and Shiho in the suit. Maybe I'm going to draw this someday.

Stages of the drawing: 1 (initial drawing); 2 (Intuos grip pen died); 3 (background finished); 4 (first layers); 5 (the last layers); 6 (finished pic).
